How Do Septic Systems Work?

Septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems are popular throughout Ontario’s cottage country. Offering rural communities that are outside the municipal sewage system access to self-contained systems. They work by treating the wastewater on-site before releasing it back into the environment.

Most systems consist of a septic tank and septic bed (also known as a drainfield, leaching bed or leach field). The septic tank is the first treatment zone and collects all of the waste, the wastewater is then dispersed through perforated pipes that transport it to the septic bed to be filtered through gravel-filled trenches. As the wastewater is slowly released into the trenches, microorganisms in the soil break down the pollutants and purify the water before it returns to the groundwater!

Types Of Septic Systems We Install

The Ontario Building Code recognizes 5 classes of septic systems; classes 1, 2, 3 and 5 have very specific and limited uses. Class 4 is the most common type of on-site sewage system used by rural homeowners, cottages and small businesses. Within class 4 septic systems are 4 levels (I know, it is a little confusing), level I and level IV are the most common types that are installed throughout Ontario.

Class 4 septic systems to install:

  • Level I:  Anaerobic Septic Tank System: This septic tank is without oxygen, which allows anaerobic bacteria to thrive and break down organic matter, reducing the volume by 50-60%.
  • Level IV: Aerobic Septic Tank System: This sewage system uses oxygen to break down organic matter further, resulting in a cleaner and softer effluent (wastewater) to be released. This is a good option for cottages and properties in areas with lower quality soil, and therefore aren’t eligible for anaerobic systems.

We specialize in custom septic system installations, our team of contractors will work with you to understand your property’s requirements, layout, soil type and local water protection regulations to design a new onsite residential sewage system specifically for you.

  • Step 1: The service will begin with a customer-supplied survey to decide on the position and layout of your new septic system.
  • Step 2: Next, our team will design a system that works perfectly for your property.
  • Step 3: Installation time! The installation can take anywhere from 1 day to 1 week, depending on the size and complexity of your system (this will be discussed with you before you schedule your service).
  • Step 4: Testing. Once everything is installed, we will test the new system to ensure that everything is working as expected.

Evaluating Old Septic Systems For Upgrades & Replacements

If you have an old septic system and are interested in upgrading or replacing it, then give us a call! We can elevate your existing system and make recommendations to expand, upgrade or simply replace it. There are a few reasons why you might want to replace or upgrade your old system:

  • Water usage has changed: If your water usage has changed, maybe because you have expanded your property, your family size has increased, or you are staying at the property more, then you might need to rethink the capacity of your current system.
  • Water testing shows contamination: It is recommended that you complete water tests at least 3 times a year. If any of these tests show contamination, then you need to book a septic system inspection.
  • Septic tank is damaged: If there is a crack in your septic tank, then you need to replace it straight away. If left, then sewage will seep into your groundwater, affecting your drinking water and going against local water protection regulations. Signs your tank might be damaged include greener grass over your tank and standing water that smells like sewage.
